Blind Cleaner

These are my blinds before:

And these are my blinds after:

I've been in this house for 3 1/2 years.
The blinds were dirty when I moved in.
I cleaned them, but the gunk was stuck on them.
They looked better, just not great.
They are metal Hunter Douglas blinds.
This window is above my kitchen sink and gets a lot of splashing, and I'm assuming, cooking grease.
Every now and then I would try to clean them again, but the grease was tougher than I was!

So, what miracle product did I use?  Nothing more than my

So not only did it get rid of the stink in my front loader washer, it has now saved my blinds (and my pocket book, I was about to give up).  All I did was take them down and put them in the bathtub with a scoop of detergent and hot water, let them soak for about an hour, more or less, rinsed and wiped clean!  They are so shiny I seriously can not believe it!

I wish all of my blinds could fit in the tub, but I am planning on using a bucket and doing the ones that won't fit.

Clean blinds make me happy.

If you haven't tried making your own laundry soap, what are you waiting for?

  2. The blinds look brand new. There is a lot you can do with laundry detergent, right? All the dirt that adhered to the blinds "magically" disappeared. You should do this more often. :D

  3. The white blinds look like what I have. I clean them probably 3 times a year, but they were WHITE when they were bought and now, even after cleaning them they have yellowed throughout the 13 years. Does the laundry soap get the yellow out as well? Thanks!

    1. I would say that mine are probably around 13/14 yers old too. I don't think mine were yellow, just so dirty. To my knowlegde there has never been a smoker in the house, and I don't know if anyone in your house smokes, but I suppose that could case them to yellow too. Give it a try, the laundry soap has oxyclean in it, so it should help brighten them. Let me know how they turn out! Good luck!

  4. Giraffe - Absolutely NO smokers in the house. We DO have a pellet stove and that is the level of the house that the blinds have yellowed. I will definitely give the Oxyclean a try. Thank you for your reply and I will definitely let you know the turn out.

    1. I do think you can use the detergent to clean the blinds, but I wouldn't recommend soaking the faux wood, it might warp! Just use a bucket and a rag. Switch to a clean rag often because it gets dirty really fast (it's amazing how much dirt is on those things! I also used a swiffer duster to remove some of the dust before wetting them. You also want to change the water whenever it starts getting too dirty, otherwise you are working against yourself! Good luck! and welcome home!!

  6. The problem I see for me, is, your blinds are metal. I have wood faux blinds (white!) that I need to get a yellowing out of.

    1. Hi again! you can still use this to clean the blinds, but the yellowing may not come out. If you are handy, I would try to clean them first (see my comments above to another reader) and if they are still really yellow, I would try to paint them if you can't afford new ones. Lowes and Home Depot will custom cut the faux wood blinds, and they really aren't too expensive, but then again not sure how many you would need. Just a thought. But do clean them, because you will feel better about it no matter what!

    2. Hello!

I am OCD about my house. I clean my blinds by hand, one by one, every 2 months. We do have odd sized windows, so they are custom cut (10 of them). Anyways, what I was getting to was, I did put one of the blinds in the tub to clean the strings, which came out beautifully. Then.... I did pain them which took over an hour (front and back of blinds) because it was extremely difficult painting around the strings. Ending result: LOVE 'EM!!!! Thanks
